Who are you? Pt. III

Date January 17, 2006

Two summers ago, I ran a Who are you
post, and over 62 people left comments. A year ago, I ran another post called Who are you? Pt. II, and again, 62 people left comments. It was so great to hear about
who everyone was that was reading pomomusings and get a chance to
"meet" people who were daily readers, but not big commenters. I was
getting around 600-700 hits back then, and then when I came to Princeton (for reasons I’m not aware of), I was getting around
1300-2000 hits (yes, not unique hits, but however Typepad
calculates them). I’m currently getting around 1000 or so, but I’m guessing we have some new readers, and I’d
love to know who you are. So anyway, everyone who comes and sees this
post, please comment (if you already did once, you don’t have to, but
the questions are a bit different…).

Neat idea. I need to do this at my site. Would be nice to get to know some of those I know frequent the site but have never heard from. Here’s mine.

What do you love most about pomomusings? I like the way my thinking is stretched here.

What do you DISLIKE most about pomomusings? Can’t say I dislike anything here. You do a very nice job.

What question about life, God, faith, spirituality, etc…, troubles you the most? Those dark nights of the soul when I wonder if God is really even there. I am troubled during those times and then after for even asking.

What do you love most about pomomusings? You’re in a place a few steps down the line from where I am, but where I’d like to be soon, and it’s interesting to hear your thoughts about it. And you have an RSS feed.
What do you DISLIKE most about pomomusings? I don’t have anything I’d change about it, actually. It’s perfect in its own, human way. :D
What question about life, God, faith, spirituality, etc…, troubles you the most? The supernatural aspects of the Bible and the like — is it all just stories? Is some of it true? What is the nature of the universe and the nature of the soul?

What do you love most about pomomusings?
Somehow I could relate with my experiences as emerging minister and seminary student. Reading honest, intelligent reflections from a minister is a breather.

What do you DISLIKE most about pomomusings?
    None really. It’s cool.

What do you love most about pomomusings? intelligent, well-written and engaging conversation about topics that wouldn’t be very welcome in my otherwise excellent (and conservative) suburban megachurch
What do you DISLIKE most about pomomusings? so far, I can’t say that there’s much I dislike. I have disagreed with some material, but I hope I’m mature enough in my faith to accept that folks come to different conclusions based upon honest, heartfelt examination
What question about life, God, faith, spirituality, etc…, troubles you the most?

Sorry for double-posting, but I just realized I missed the last question:

What question about life, God, faith, spirituality, etc…, troubles you the most?
Life: not knowing what the future holds for my oldest child, who is profoundly affected by autism
God, faith, spirituality: that there’s too much suspicion and misunderstanding from “conservatives” toward “liberals” in the church (and perhaps vice-versa), and that we don’t have reasonable ways to bridge the gap.

What do you DISLIKE most about pomomusings? nothing really, well-designed, thoughtful site
What question about life, God, faith, spirituality, etc…, troubles you the most? since i’m in the relief reconstruction industry, i have questions about God’s place in the midst of natural disasters. i’m currently working in a post-Katrina environment and the devastation here is unlike anything you’ve seen on tv. it can’t be captured on tv and i don’t understand why He allows it all to happen sometimes…

What do you love most about pomomusings? That it keeps me thinking about stuff that many of my everyday friends in seattle don’t talk much about. It continues to push my comfortability level… And I am starting to like that.
What do you DISLIKE most about pomomusings? Adam’s ugly mug on the front page… kidding bro.
What question about life, God, faith, spirituality, etc…, troubles you the most? Why am I so double minded? Why do we not listen to that still small voice? What does listening to God look like? I’ve tried it to the best of my ability and been burnt. I don’t want to put words in God’s mouth, but it feels like if I try to listen to Him, and communicate the ‘feeling’ that I think is God, then I am actually putting words in God’s mouth… People speak falsely for God all the time… “God told me this, the Lord told me that…” and i am scared to do that.

what do you DISLIKE most…: can’t say much about that…. i enjoy my time here.

What I like most about Pomomusings is the glimpse it provides into the people (this blogger and the links to other bloggers provided) who will be stepping up into the institutional church at a time when the institution needs freshness and renovation more than it has in recent history.

What do you love most about pomomusings? I love the mix of theology and fun, and the way you naturally bring those two things together, because they should be together.
What do you DISLIKE most about pomomusings? It’s all pretty good. Can’t even think of constructive criticism right now. Would it seem desperately nerdish to ask to be on your “Sojourners” list or is that for your actual friends? I do have a subscription to “Sojourners” magazine….
What question about life, God, faith, spirituality, etc…, troubles you the most? I guess the whole matter of ‘unity in diversity.’ Sometimes people feel like if they don’t agree they can’t be friends, and I think that’s pretty sad. So I’m concerned to bring together people with different views to listen to each other and hopefully find some common ground. You do a good job with that on the site here, Adam. Kudos!

Adam. I read it just to stay up on the man about Princeton. Need I say more?

What do you DISLIKE most about pomomusings?
I have particular issues with blogs being glib, not exhibiting a whole lot of substance, or seeming like little more than opinion. Sometimes pomomusings rises above that, which is a strong compliment, but I’m still not crazy about blogs.

What question about life, God, faith, spirituality, etc…, troubles you the most?
That I have to continue to answer why philosophy matters or explain that ideas are always already lived.

What I love most about Pomomusings:
I really love feeling connected to PTS and knowing that there is some kind of community of this kind of thought there. When I was there…Oh NO I have become one of those people.

    What I dislike about Pomomusings:
I dislike it that you sometimes feel apologetic about your romance with your bride to be. You won’t lose your pomo cred if you are silly and giddy and give up on some the cynicism etc.

    What question pervades me?
Why on earth or in heaven would God chose me to lead a church?

What do you like most about pomomusings? The provocative posts, and the fun pics. It’s also frequently-updated and interesting.
What do you DISLIKE most about pomomusings? There are not enough posts on nerf guns. Heh, I dunno.
What question about life, God, faith, spirituality, etc…, troubles you the most? The disregard that people have for intellectuals. I can understand a distaste for intellectualism for intellectualism’s sake (as I share in it), but I’m often frustrated with people’s blatant (and often flippant) dismissal of people with education and who seek to learn more about God through theology in the sciences or theology departments. Especially considering we’re commanded to love the Lord our God with all our heart, soul, and mind, I’m just so baffled at this at times.

What I like: honest/authentic/raw writing that fleshes out what this whole Cross-bearing business is all about… in all it’s tangents from theology to whatever cranny of the universe we have a fondness for to beauty to american Christianity… i like the conversations of critiques mixed with Light (lamp) posts of Hope.
    What I don’t like: mmm… ??
Question: trying to absorb the depth of Mercy of Christ… how Hope makes it’s birth in the midst of terrible tragedy.

What do you like most about pomomusings? The fact that it takes culture seriously and isn’t afraid to confront mores and (mis)conceptions about what Christian faith is and is not.

What do you DISLIKE most about pomomusings?
Sometimes I think the Cleave that I know isn’t the Cleave is represented on this blog.

What question about life, God, faith, spirituality, etc…, troubles you the most? At present I am most troubled by the relatively passive stance that American Christians are taking against global trade injustice.

What do you DISLIKE most about pomomusings?

What do you DISLIKE most about pomomusings?
Not a whole lot. I dont like that you are in seminary, and im not.. :)

What question about life, God, faith, spirituality, etc…, troubles you the most?
Most everything, as of now… How I can be so unfaithful and not trust god, but still ask him daily to help me in my strugles. I dont understand how I can find it hard to trust god, but at the same time break down every night and pray for help with money/stuggles/life…

‚Ä¢ Dislike Most about POMO: Profanity; Glorifying drunkenness; Pro LGBT “theology”

‚Ä¢ What question troubles me: I guess questions concerning church praxis/polity/philosophy trouble me the most these days. It seems like many circles under the label of Christianity are in a state of convulsive flux. I often wonder, “Where is this all going?”

I like your blog, Adam. In fact, yours inspired me to start one of my own.

What do you like most about pomomusings? It’s interesting to see what seminary is like, since it’s something I’m considering myself (although there’s no way I could understand the entirety of the seminary program through a blog); I like that I actually have read some of the texts you’re discussing and I’m able to keep up.
What do you DISLIKE most about pomomusings? Nothing in particular.
What question about life, God, faith, spirituality, etc…, troubles you the most? How people can use the same text for so many different things that I don’t agree with… but that’s something I like as well. The plurality of Christianity is both a negative and positive, in my opinion. However, I think unity above these disagreements is the pinnacle of being in a healthy faith community.

What do you dislike most about pomomusings: All the mean commenters that are not open to dialogue and that maybe they don’t have all the answers after all.

What do you like most about pomomusings? I thoroughly enjoyed your summer in Palestine! And I have been introduced to the Emergent Church movement through your blog.

What do you DISLIKE most about pomomusings? Not much. A little edgy at times (as in pushing the limits), but that’s a good thing in my opinion.

What question about life, God, faith, spirituality, etc…, troubles you the most?
That’s a big one. Although I consider myself a commited Christian, I have some serious questions that apply to almost all Christian organizations.
    1) If accepting Christ before you die is the only way to heaven, what will God do with all those people who died before he came to earth or before the message reached them?
    2) Why do we (well most of us) consider the Bible to be the in-errant, incontravertible, literal word of God?

I would love to hear you take on those two issues!

Like about pomomusings :: always a new post when I check in, always something new to digest, and usually pretty thoughtful rather than naval gazing.
Don’t like about pomomusings :: it was the flashing gif around Christmas-time, but now that that has slipped off the front page, it would have to be the banner…don’t really care for the banner.
Most troubling question :: If extraterestrial life were found, should we (meaning Christians) witness (meaning evangelize) to them? It’s actually a much more difficult theological question when you really stop to think about it.

What question about life, God, faith, spirituality, etc…, troubles you the most… (1) The Trinity/Triune stuff doesn’t make any sense and seems like some sort of committee compromise that came out of Nicea. What do I like about PM? Finding shared values with Adam and reading about his experiences at PTS.
What do I dislike about PM? Sometimes the posts teeter on the edge of confidently towing the Emergent party line. The concept of public “reviews” of churches seems a little insensitive…though I’ve certainly seen worse by other Christian bloggers. I do enjoy visiting on a regular basis though, and Adam generously and thoughtfully provides a great forum for individuals of different geographical, political, and theological backgrounds to discuss. Sometimes the conversations unhelpfully digress into public skewering of “high profile” individuals, which this site could probably rise above.
What question about life, God, faith, etc. troubles me the most?
I am overwhelmed with the incredibly wide spectrum of beliefs and traditions there are that attempt to address the question of how to interpret central issues of theology, including exactly what the pre and post resurrection Jesus did, and what His work ought to mean for the Church today. Also, wondering specifically what our “evangelical” faith ought to constitute, and why.

What do you DISLIKE most about pomomusings?
Knowing that if I recommend it to some of my friends and family they’re gonna freak on me because they’ll think I’ve gone “liberal” . . . Oh well, I linked it on my blog last week and haven’t been confronted yet. . . but the day isn’t over yet.
What question about life, God, faith, spirituality, etc…, troubles you the most? For me the most troubling thing in life is balancing the passion to pursue a dream and the responsibility to be a good husband.

What do you like most about pomomusings? It’s just real and immediate, and I sense that Adam is trying to follow Jesus.
What question about life, God, faith, spirituality, etc…, troubles you the most? How does a loving God work in a world where children are killed?

What do you like most about pomomusings? I haven’t been reading for a terribly long time, but I would have to say I like your honesty.
What do you DISLIKE most about pomomusings? Ummm…give me some time, I’ll find something…criticism is one of my special talents.
What question about life, God, faith, spirituality, etc…, troubles you the most? There’s a verse in Romans that says something about “how will they hear if no one tells them?” It sort of freaks me out that telling people about God is one of the most basic responsibilities of my life.

What do you like most about pomomusings? I like the randomness and the consistency. I like “hearing” you work out issues with faith and culture, and the sub-culture the church lives in.
What do you DISLIKE most about pomomusings? Nothing really…just don’t get too gushy over the marriage stuff!
What question about life, God, faith, spirituality, etc…, troubles you the most? Who’s to say we got any of this right? God’s ways are not our ways and yet we try to box God in, in so many ways. Is any of our faith and practice pleasing to God?

What do you like most about pomomusings?
Your blog is insightful, creative, honest, funny. I love your style, your even-handedness, your social activism, and your love for the Lord and your fiancee.

What do you DISLIKE most about pomomusings?
I can’t say that I dislike anything. However, I do sense that there is still more ahead for you, Adam, and that you have yet to realize the mystical dimension of your faith, such as theosis/deification. Keep pressing on… the most important things aren’t written in theological books, or mentioned by professors.

What question about life, God, faith, spirituality, etc…, troubles you the most?
Not exactly “troubled” by it, but realization is the top thing.

I’m just an occasional reader - but I know if I come to this site, a post or two are going to challenge me to think outside the box. I love your photography.

What do you like most about pomomusings? Lot’s of posts, and good ones!
What do you DISLIKE most about pomomusings? Lot’s of posts, too much good stuff. It’s hard to read everything I’d like to in this season of my life.
What question about life, God, faith, spirituality, etc…, troubles you the most? Why doesn’t the church in America take US military violence seriously? & Civil Religion being passed off as real Christianity.

What do I like Most? It helps me understand the new alliace of Christan and Muslim anti semitism. It was a real force during WW2 when the Arabs joined the Nazi’s and we see this in huge evidece today in the church’s support of Hamas and Hisbollah.
