Mark Driscoll Quoted Me

A Facebook friend sent me a message to let me know that Mark Driscoll had referenced pomomusings in his chapter, “The Church and the Supremacy of Christ in a Postmodern World” in the new book coming out, “The Supremacy of Christ in a Postmodern World.” You can download the PDF here, and then search for pomomusings in the PDF. Driscoll quotes my quoting of Phyllis Tickle at the 2006 AAR Session entitled “What is Emergent?” (post here), when she said that Brian McLaren is to this current reformation what Martin Luther was to the Protestant Reformation.

I think its cool that he quoted you, but I wonder why he didnt dig for a direct source and quote Tickle herself?

    Adam,
Maybe now you would consider being kinder to Mr. Driscoll and refrain from the personal attacks and focus disagreeing in a Christ-like manner

I have to say that (in spite of myself) I rather enjoyed this chapter from Driscoll. Some of his language in and around gender and sexuality still seems gratuitously cruel (God forbid that Jesus would be ‘limp-wristed’, and God help anyone that still is!)…but I appreciate his presence in this conversation. I’m not surprised that his church has grown so rapidly. He’s not just hate-baiting (although he’s doing that too, and its a great way to gather a crowd), but also articulating, in a very clear way, the tensions in the post-modern turn. I suppose I’m resonating with it more at the moment because I am moving in Christian circles where a lot of the ‘edges’ of the Gospel have been glossed over in an effort to reach out to a very skeptical culture. And while I’m not sure I’m on board with all those edges either, I think it is a huge mistake to deny that they are there, and always have been. Driscoll and co. aren’t going to let anyone forget that anytime soon, and for that, I am grateful.

I’m also very curious what his closed-door conversations with McLaren and Bell are like.

Wow – that makes you so official now doesn’t it. First you bag him, then you’re full of pride when he quotes you.
