The New Christians: A Review
March 10, 2008
UPDATE: Book giveaway. I have 4 copies of “The New Christians” to send to the first four people who email me with a picture of Tony’s footwear of choice while he’s on the road.
Prior to reading The New Christians, I have always told everyone that Pete Rollins’s How (Not) to Speak of God has been [...]
Magic in Miller Chapel
December 14, 2007
This morning I preached in Miller Chapel. I will write more about it later, but I wanted to let those of you who wanted to hear it have that chance. I have a DVD of the service that turned out really well. Right now I’m just trying to figure out how to get it online. [...]

Many of you know that I will be presenting the following workshop at the Always Reforming: Emergence in the Presbyterian Church Conference in a week (it’s not too late to register).
Presbymergent Polity 101: Worship, Sacraments and (Dis)Order
Many view the Book of Order as a rigid, rule-focused guide for saying more about what one “can’t” do [...]
Rethinking the Use of Creeds in Worship
January 28, 2007
Doug Pagitt recently posted a video on his site in which he ranted about Creeds. Below is a portion from his rant (but you should go listen to it for yourself):
Creeds are not summations of Christianity - they’re not summations of faith. Creeds are articulations of particular understandings inside of a certain contextual context. There [...]
Fencing in the table?
November 18, 2005
From the PC(USA) Book of Order, the Directory for Worship section on Baptism, W-2.4011:
“Who may receive: The invitation to the Lord’s Supper is extended to all who have been baptized, remembering that access to the Table is not a right conferred upon the worthy, but a privilege given to the undeserving who come in faith, [...]
Worship at Sabeel
July 11, 2005
Last week a few of us went into Jerusalem for the morning – we made it to the Temple Mount, although actually entering the Dome of the Rock is only for Muslims, and apparently it’s been that way for a few years now. It is absolutely gorgeous architecturally – it’s hard to imagine that this [...]

The first worship experience I went to at the Emergent Convention was put on by IKON, from Belfast. They led us through a ritual and let us take the match as an icon to keep with us and remind us of the evening. I was most impressed by the parables, some of which were written [...]

May 20, 2005
Post-protestant…moving to worship where elements of worship are not denominationally proprietary.
Older generations experienced denominations that truly believed that their form of worship was the ONLY legitimate form/method of worship.
What if we’re moving to an era where liturgy is acknowledged as universal…a dynamic tension of form and freedom, identity and innovation, and where ‘evolution’ is seen [...]
Liberal songwriting…
August 30, 2004
Last weekend I was at a family camp for a progressive/liberal PCUSA church out of Boise. I had a wonderful time with the pastor, the youth and the people from their congregation. They did some wonderful self-reflection exercises that weekend, looking at their lives from a Jungian psychological perspective. Before the sessions where I left [...]

I’m typing this from my hotel room, hoping that a little moblogging tonight might work out. I have been told my numerous people (incl. Anna Aven) that Fuller’s library had wireless internet, so I tried to find it tonight to no avail. I finally was directed to a note on a whiteboard on the 4th [...]
