“Story” has always been something important in my life. I used to read ravenously. I used to write stories for the local Young Authors Conferences.
While I’m starting to get into reading more now – it’s been something that I’ve let slide in my life – as my time has gotten consumed by technology & social media. But that hasn’t changed the way in which I view “story” as something that’s incredibly important in my life. I especially appreciated reading Brian McLaren’s “The Story We Find Ourselves In” when it came out 2003 and the idea of understanding the Bible as a collection of stories in which we too find ourselves a part of.
The first sermon I preached when I started my position at Asbury United Methodist Church was entitled “Storytelling.” In the sermon, I pointed out that:
- We tell stories because we are forgetful – and need to be reminded.
- We tell stories because it is through stories that we cultivate our faith.
- We tell stories in order to find out where we fit into God’s story.
When you think about the idea of story, what does it bring up for you?
In full disclosure, I wrote this post so that I could pick up a copy of Don Miller’s new book “A Million Miles in a Thousand Years.” Chris Brogan really liked it and is giving away copies for anyone who writes a post about the role of “story” in their life.
