Get your Calibri Here

As you may have noticed, I have recently changed fonts on my blog here. Unfortunately, unless you have the font Calibri installed on your computer, my site will show up in a larger Verdana font, which I’m not a huge fan of. But I really wanted to see what the site would look like with my new favorite font.

So, if you are interested in viewing this site like so many others do, using Calibri, download the Calibri font here.

Following Christ

l

I love this. I’m sure many of you have seen this around by now, but I think it’s great [ht Marko]. And perhaps, timely, as many were at Ash Wednesday services this past evening and as we officially enter into Lent. Those of us who are very active on Twitter do follow a ton of people. I like to think that my list is fairly small but I am currently following 154 people. I enjoy staying connected with these folks: even if it’s just knowing the little random things that are going on their lives – but I do follow them…

…as we enter into these time of Lent, this time of preparation, of walking alongside Jesus during his last days and his Passion, we are called to follow him. Not just in that “sure I’d like to keep up with him” way that many of us do with people we follow on Twitter. But rather in that whole-hearted, deeply-passionate, uninhibited kind of way. We are called to “repent and believe the gospel” (the phrase I said over and over again tonight as we put the ash on people’s foreheads).

While I’ve seen a few people giving up internet-related things for Lent, for better or for worse, I don’t think I could do that. Too much of the work I do is tied to the wonderful interwebs. But I can think more about how I am following Jesus during this month, as opposed to the way in which I follow everyone else.

As Jan Edmiston mentioned in her post on Presbymergent, “Connecting Face to Face,” the Presbymergent Coordinating Group is meeting in Louisville this week, February 17-19. We have almost the entire Coordinating Group coming out for the gathering, and we’re all very excited. We’re going to be having some really important conversations and I’ll be sure to report back on whatever comes out of this gathering. Be sure and check the Presbymergent blog during the next week or two. If you haven’t already, you can subscribe to the site’s RSS feed by clicking here.

“If You Choose”

This sermon was preached at Asbury United Methodist Church in Livermore, CA on Sunday, February 15, 2009. The lectionary texts I used in the sermon were 2 Kings 5.1-14 and Mark 1.40-45.

Before we look at this story of the healing of the leper, I wanted to read just a brief passage from a book that I’m sure many of you read during your daily devotions, possibly even this morning. It’s from a book in the Hebrew Scriptures called Leviticus:

The Lord said to Moses and Aaron, “When anyone has a swelling or a rash or a shiny spot on their skin that may be a defiling skin disease, they must be brought to Aaron the priest or to one of his sons who is a priest. The priest is to examine the sore on the skin, and if the hair in the sore has turned white and the sore appears to be more than skin deep, it is a defiling skin disease. When the priest examines them, he shall pronounce them ceremonially unclean. [Read more...]
