Current AT&T Customers: An iPhone Hack

If you’re an AT&T customer who is not eligible for a phone upgrade right now, and could potentially be stuck being asked to pay $200 more than other folks for an iPhone this Friday, a friend just sent me this link to a hack that seems like it must work. Here is the paragraph from the article that explains how it works:

So here’s how it’s done: To become eligible for an upgrade, grab a friend who already has a first generation iPhone. Remove the SIM card from your friend’s iPhone and replace it with the one from your own phone. Plug the iPhone into a Mac or PC running a recent copy of iTunes. iTunes will recognize that the iPhone is loaded with a different SIM and begin the activation process. You’ll literally need to sign up for an iPhone plan at this point, sign a new two-year contract, etc. But hey, that doesn’t matter since you’ll be signing up for a new contract when you get your iPhone 3G.     You have to take the bad with the good. Apple is a funny critter. Like the phone does not have a removable battery. (More “style” than “design”.)

    Along with the business model. Some of the “rules” are just marketing fluff. With the initial demand, the high cost path will be the one promoted. With a little exploration, a cheaper alternative is possible.
