My Evolving Fetish with Socks
March 12, 2008

I have a bit of a fetish that I feel like I can share with you all know. I love socks. For some people it’s shoes (well, I do love my Keens), for others it’s coats (actually, I do have a lot of coats too..) - but for me, it’s socks. I have always loved socks for some reason. Getting new socks is one of my favorite things. And over the years, I’ve been moving up the “sock ladder.” When I worked at Camp Sawtooth in Sun Valley, Idaho, I first experienced the joys of Ultimax socks. They wicked moisture away, they were comfy for hiking, they were great. I even still have a few pairs of my first Ultimax socks that I bought, back around 1999; that’s some damn good sock-life.
After I gave up on traditional white crew socks, I picked up some crew socks from Ducks Unlimited. These were really nothing special, but they were comfy. After a few years of these, I started picking up some socks from Target. I suppose this may have been going a few rungs down on the sock ladder, but I had a few pairs of Champion socks that I really liked from Target.
However, everything changed over the past few months. Last spring I had picked up a pair of Heathered Rib SmartWool socks. I thought I was in heaven. Seriously - these socks were amazing. The combination of these socks with my new Keens. Wow. So I asked for some more for Christmas. And I got some. And I wondered if life could get ANY better for my feet.
And, what do you know? It could. And it did. Because one of Sarah’s cousins picked me up a pair of the most amazing (and probably most expensive) socks I’ve ever owned. The company is based in Vermont and is called Darn Tough. Seriously. These socks really are darn tough and the most comfortable, amazing socks ever. I really do think I may have reached the top rung of the sock ladder. I have the In-Country 1/4 Sock (pictured on far left and far right) and the In-Country Micro Crew (pictured second from left).
So there it is. My love for socks and my current recommendation for Darn Tough socks. Does anyone else have any odd fetishes that would be appropriate to share?

Sorry no fetishes to report, your sock post reminded me of a phrase my sister coined a phrase when she was a camp counselor many years ago and dealing with campers who didn’t change sox/wore wet shoes/had all kinds of foot problems….”practice safe sox.” And I’m going to look up those Darn Tough sox on behalf of my military sons and their friends…they sound awesome.

i love my darn tough socks! you are right about them being expensive, but they do such a great job of wicking away and are so comfortable. i have two pairs now, and i get sad when they are in the wash and unavailable for me to wear.

I can dig the sock fetish, I love cycling socks. slim, fun colours and designs. And for a technical aspect great.
My fetish.. bikes and bike parts. I’ve got a 1 bdrm apt with 4 bikes, soon a 5th and a tower of parts. But can’t give em up. I love them, all kinds of parts shapes and sizes. I get excited when new magainze issues come out telling me of new parts, and their reviews. ooooo the thril.

I’m starting my related fetish with watches. Currently sporting a favorite diesel, and Skagen is what started the whole thing for me. I don’t know that I’ll ever climb the ladder in $, because watches get ridiculous, but hopefully in style. I share yours with socks as well actually, but since I’m in AZ, I might not be able to follow, being that we need to disperse heat first and foremost, then moisture. Any suggestions for a hot climate?
Yeah, stuff white people like is awesome. We’re so weird.

Do you have any of those socks you can make sock monkeys from?

Yeah Darn Tough. Working at REI, their rep came in with a bunch of samples. They were kinda weird patterns, so not many people took them. I ended up with a bunch and love ‘em. I’m not about to end my relationship with Smartwool, but what’s a little fun on the side. . .

If you liked stuffwhitepeoplelike.com (as recommended by Christopher M. above), read http://www.stuffchristianslike.net. I think it is even funnier . . . albeit a little more embarassing.
