So I thought I had joined a Buy Nothing Day group on Facebook, but then realized that I hadn’t, so for some reason, that made going out and buying something today okay. I know it’s bad – I know it’s just giving in to the consumeristic/materialistic culture we live in today, but…for only $169 I could get a 22″ Acer Widescreen monitor. I thought about joining my in-laws for a 5.30am excursion this morning, but I decided against it. Circuit City still had the monitor at around 1pm, so that was good. At any rate, I fully support all of you who did not buy something today – and I’m sure I’ll do it some year. But I’ve been wanting a new monitor for awhile, and…well, let me stop there with my excuses.

Dude, do I get your old monitor?
I don’t if my not buying anything today counts as participating in Buy Nothing Day since: A) I hadn’t paid any attention to the fact that it was Buy Nothing Day and B) I wasn’t going to buy anything, anyway.
My mother taught me years ago that shopping on the day after Thanksgiving is like drinking on New Year’s Eve, strictly for amateurs.
You avoided the 5:30 AM insanity and puts you a long way toward protesting the madness. I decided to take my family for a walk around Green Lake in Seattle and enjoy being outside with people as opposed to inside with others fighting for stuff. I didn’t join the facebook group but I probably should have signed on. I join/leave facebook groups too often already…
Is not the whole point of buy nothing day to truly opt out of satisfying our inclinations for stuff? I mean the fact that you really wanted it sounds like all the more reason to fully participate, not rationalize your way into buying. Sounds pretty weak to me.
