Sarah Silverman’s “Amazing Grace”
September 13, 2007

Just finished watching Sarah Silverman’s “Jesus is Magic” (warning: not for everyone - extreme profanity, sex jokes and much more) on Comedy Central. Sarah Silverman is outrageous - completely over the top. I haven’t ever watched much of her work, but I did love her comments on Britney Spears’ performance at the VMAs. So we just finished “Jesus is Magic” and while many parts are just hilarious, thought some of you may be interested in her rendition of “Amazing Grace”. Again, not for the faint-hearted, but if you’re up for it…

you either love or hate her. i’m about as liberal, everything is fine by me, as it comes. but for some reason, every time i watch her i feel like god is going to strike me dead on the spot. she’s so incredibly over the top that i think that she loses her “funniness”. it’s almost like she tries to be over-the-top sacrilegious on purpose. like she’s forcing it. or at least it feels forced to me.
btw, every blog i go to now is sporting cleaker. you’re a celeb.

I never thought that she was all that funny. So she says some shocking things. So what? I am not that impressed.

I love Sarah, I have a secret crush on her. I LMAO on the Special. But yeah she is crude, rude, and socially unacceptable.
Have you seen her show? Is it any good?

That’s funny, the first recommended video after Sarah is Doug Pagitt talking about Yoga.

Her comments about Paris Hilton always make me chuckle.

She’s about as funny as Dane Cook….oh wait, Dane Cook’s not funny.

Unexpectedness, delight, and incongruity are at the heart of humor for me. But Ms. Silverman just doesn’t surprise me. I think to myself…ah, yes, that is very creatively offensive…but I can’t bring myself to laugh. As Josh noted, it seems too precise, too calculated somehow. Ah well.
