Awkward Chatter

I will probably write more about the MacBook later, but I have it, and it’s working great. I also got the Adobe Creative Suite 3 today, and that’s been great fun to play with. However, I just had my first video chat - and I have to admit, it was a little awkward. I hadn’t tried it before but wanted to see what it was like, and a friend and fellow CPE-colleague was online - so he video-chatted with me. But Sarah was asleep so I couldn’t actually talk - so I just sat there, smiling, with my headphones on.

It was a little awkward.

Not because of him, but because I couldn’t talk, and had to type, so I was slow to respond, etc. Anyway - now that my first video chat is out of the way, maybe I won’t be as awkward next time. One can hope. I’m just not sure about the video-chatting. I generally am doing multiple things when I chat with people, multi-tasking, and sometimes I don’t want them to know I am doing that. So now - it’s like they can see whatever I’m doing…anwyay, anyone out there have any video chatting techniques that could help a struggler like me?

obviously being able to talk helps.

    its not awkard then.

that’s like saying sex was awkward but never taking off your pants.

    Hey Adam,

I’m a bit new to the iChat AV game too, but I will say that decent headphones or (*shudder*) a Bluetooth headset will go a long way in eliminating the echo or feedback. Good light helps, too.

I haven’t found many situations where a video conversation is appropriate, but they do come up now and then (it’s a lot easer to explain what a DSL line filter looks like when you can hold one up to the camera).

I stumbled on a handy free app called Homezone the other day…it’s a tool that lets you create actions / run AppleScripts based on wireless networks or Bluetooth devices that are in range…start/stop screensaver, pause iTunes when you walk away, for example. Not really related, but fun to play with.

    Peace -
