A Day at the Dog Park
June 23, 2007

Yesterday after work, Sarah and I took Sadie to her favorite dog park at Veterans Memorial Park in Hamilton, NJ. She had a couple of friends to play with and she ran and ran and ran. Sadie is damn fast. Very fast. Anyway - it was fun to see her playing with the other dogs and enjoying herself - still not going after a ball or a frisbee, but…that’ll come. To see a few more fun pictures (including my other favorite) check out Sadie’s photo album.
In other Sadie news - this dog sneezes. And sneezes. And sneezes - dog allergies? Anyone know anything about why a dog would be sneezing a lot? Any cheap remedies?

My dog sneezes with some frequency, often at the same time he is grinding his face into the furniture in excitement (cause or effect?), and he occasionally gets red eyes. By all accounts, dogs are susceptable to many of the same allergies as humans, and some of the remedies are similar. For example, they use Benedryl antihistamine for dogs.
Personally, I pretty much treat these things in Pappy the way that I treat them in myself. Every medication comes at the cost of some risks and side effects. I try and tough it out until it really is incapacitating.

Why does Sadie look like she’s about ready to tear your throat out in this picture? Ya, sweet pit bull nothing ;-)

Wow. Vets Park is about a mile from my house. Truly welcome to the neighborhood!

My dogs sneeze when they are ticked at me, kind of a canine cursing. I sneeze back. They sneeze again. It’s VERY important to my dogs that THEY have the last word.
But seriously, dogs do have allergies. Each of mine take Benedryl (sp?) every day. The biggest cues that my boys are having allergy trouble is ‘eye poop’ and licking things. Apparantly dog’s tongues itch and allergies can make that miserable.
Ask the vet next time you are in or if she seems miserable give her/him a call. You’ll be shocked to know how much Benedryl a dog her size gets. Charlie (11lbs) and Leroy (13 lbs) take one a day during allergy season. Fred (14 lbs) has it worse and the vet has him on 2 a day. It doesn’t make them sleepy at all.

Denali sneezed a lot after we brought her home. If it’s consistently snotty, you might want to consider taking her to the vet - she may have a respiratory infection (as Denali did). The staff and Doctors at Nassau Animal Hospital are very friendly…
