I’m sorry Jack…
May 1, 2007
Josh already beat me to it, but I had to say it too (and I know Zach is going to really enjoy this post).
Jack Bauer - you are dead to me.
Seriously, last night’s episode was b-o-r-i-n-g. Each progression was predictable and just plain boring. Perhaps it’s the fact that you can’t do this type of show for six seasons. Perhaps it’s the fact that we’re watching it on TV and we’ve watched every other season on DVD. I don’t know what it is, but this season really hasn’t done it for me. They couldn’t even make the whole “Uh-oh ,there are nuclear bombs in terrorist’s hands”-plot last the whole season, so they had to transition to the “Well, what do you know, Audrey Raines is still alive but has been psychologically-tortured”-plot. I can’t imagine they’ll do another season, but if so, I won’t be watching it. Jack Bauer was amazing at the beginning - I’ll admit it, I got sucked in hardcore. The first time he saved the world - it was great. Even the second and third times. But then they had to start recycling some themes, villains, etc.
Sorry Jack - I thought we had something good going; but now, I will take LOST and MI-5 over you any day.

I recently watched the first season on DVD, and when I finished I just thought “eh — I don’t really need to watch more of this”. I guess I might feel differently if I had started watching it on tv from the beginning.

I’m with you, Adam. I was HOOKED on several seasons of 24 on DVD. However, I started noticing after about season 3, “Hmm, every season seems the same.” Last night’s episode wasn’t the first thing that’s been predictable about 24. Let’s review the recipe for “Baked 24″: Add one politician, a corrupt political aide, a mole at CTU, a bizarre move by Jack that makes him look as if he’s ‘turned,’ a call from CTU to “bring Jack in,” somebody in CTU with family issues that they leave hanging for the good of the country, a resolution that shows Jack is still the good guy (not to mention that some high-up official knew Jack was good the whole time), a kidnapping, a death, three levels of a terrorist network, and a happy hug ending. Bake for 24 episodes and let cool on DVD. That is the standard 24 recipe, and yes, it’s time for it to be canned.

Adam and others,
I have to respectfully disagree. Is 24 somewhat predictable? Sure, there are elements that are predictable. Ever since Nina was outed as the mole in day 1, we’ve been suspecting everybody as a new mole.
Is there always a crisis that Jack ends up saving everyone from? Yeah.
But don’t tell me for a minute that you aren’t dying to know if the Chinese get away with the chip, if the damage is too much for it to be useful, if the Russians are going to attack, what the heck was up with James Heller…good grief, I’m even somewhat interested in whether or not it’s over between Morris and Chloe.
I admit, last nights episode was not the greatest. I can give you episodes in day 2 that were kinda boring. But as you said, you (and I) watched those on DVD. If there was a boring episode, just watch the next one and the action’s back baby!
All I’m saying is, don’t give up on it yet … not that I think you’d be able to anyway. 24 is addicting … that’s just the way it is. And as long as they keep it on the air, I’ll probably still be watching, and I’ll bet you will too.
My 2 cents :-)

This season has been a bit of a snoozer. Terrorists with nukes? Been there, done that, bought the t-shirt. Two, what, three times already? Terrorists from (gasp!) the Middle East, even! Where do they think these plots up?
Geez, come up with some original villains for crying out loud.
Jack and Audrey Raines again? Zzzzzzzzzz
Chloe and Morris? Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
Where the hell are Tony and Michelle? Now they had chemistry. Oh yeah, they’re dead.
Or are they?….

Nathan, thanks for the predictable defense for the predictable show.

I actually stopped watching 24 a few episodes ago… I am way more hooked on “Heroes”. The writers of 24 have some serious work to do if they wish to retain viewership next season.
Also… I wish you had titled the post “Hit the road, Jack.”

MI-5 will break your heart, friend… They don’t give a crap about their characters!

Have you given Heroes a shot? Or - if you want to see how to have a predictable story arch and still be awesome - you should be watching House.
