Emergent Manifesto of Hope

I’m sure I’ve mentioned this enough, but you should definitely order a copy of An Emergent Manifesto of Hope (available April 1, 2007). I just got my two complimentary copies in the mail yesterday, and I have to agree with Doug Pagitt, it’s a book that just “feels” great. It’s got a great cover design and it definitely is a “hefty” book - there is some great material in this book. It’s in the same vein as Stories of Emergence, but it really covers a broad range of topics (salvation, church, sex, leadership to mention just a few).

Anyway, I think you’ll really enjoy getting to hear some of the thoughts of those of us involved in the Emergent conversation. It’s a good book - and besides, it’s fun to see my name in print.

I hate for my first comment on your site to be critical, but the book’s cover design resonates to me the way religous music and thinking tend to be lagging behind what’s current. The ONLY things you’ll see with these spastic gradients and color tones are Christian posters and books.

Mark Melnick is an incredible book designer, but even the work on his site is a couple years old…yet still more current.

My friend Travis developed the site for The Voice that you linked to a few posts before this. He’s the only guy I know of who’s doing current work for Christian groups–even pushing forward.

I just wish we Jesus Followers would step it up. It’s unbelievably embarrassing to watch speakers at these emergent conferences do their best to re-enact Steve Jobs’ Keynotes.

I heeded the advise of a fellow professor of mine who told me this blog was informational, yet seeing this picture I get the feeling you are nothing more than a self-indulgent American who has never really experienced the world. You claim to be wise, yet your very clothing shows you to be myopic and afraid. I have regret at the thought of coming to visit your internet site.

(At least learn about how terrifying it is for some of us in other cultures before you wear a top that says “America is scary”…you really sound like you have no idea- yet I suppose that will get you “hits” on your site…maybe you are more intelligent than I thought)

Adam, I’m pleasantly surprised to report that I just got the book today (I had ordered through my local bookstore.) Looking forward to cracking it open soon!
