An Open Letter to Steve Jobs

Date February 21, 2007

Dear Steve,

So, I’ve heard the rumors. Well, I’ve heard many rumors - and just recently heard that you’re possibly going to roll out a 15" MacBook in the 2nd Quarter of 2007?

Why?

I mean, I guess I can understand that some users of the MacBook might want a slightly larger screen than the 13" - I get that. And I get that you might be having a lot of people who would be more willing to buy a 15" MacBook, than splurging $1999 or $2499 for a 15" MacBook Pro. But what about us solid, loyal 12" PowerBook G4 users…? What do you expect us to upgrade to? I really don’t think I want a 15" or 17" MacBook Pro - the 15" is just a little too big and the 17" is just ridiculous - I might as well get an iMac. So what do I do?

By the way Steve, I’ll let you in on a little secret about myself…I’m kind of a Mac-snob. I mean, I really enjoy proselytizing for you - I enjoy getting Mac converts, but so often, they were rarely PowerBook users. Normally they just bought an iBook. Which is great — I love that they switched…but secretly, deep down, I found the PowerBooks to be superior. The look, the feel of the keyboard, the backlit keyboard, the trackpad…it just has a much sleeker look and feel to it. And that’s what I want. I want a 12" MacBook Pro. I’ll buy it. And I know many more will. We want the power of the MacBook Pro, but we also want the sleek, sexy feel of our beloved 12" PowerBooks. And we want portability. I don’t want to have to choose between a 13" MacBook and a 15" MacBook Pro. I want the 12". And so do others.

Is that asking too much? I don’t think so.

The reason I felt the need to write is that I had heard we were getting a 12" Ultrathin MacBook Pro - and then heard elsewhere that it was a false rumor. That it would not be happening. That was a rough week for me.

However, I just read another rumor about a MacBook Mini. This could be it - but are you just playing with us? Will it have the MacBook Pro feel or the MacBook feel…? Or will you really be making this? I can’t see any reason why you wouldn’t Steve…please give it to us in June at the WWDC (or earler, if you’re feeling really nice - my AppleCare on my PowerBook G4 ends at the end of April, so early May would be the perfect time to release the 12" MacBook Pro). And when you do get me my 12" MacBook Pro - please have it already pre-installed with Leopard. That would be just gorgeous.

Steve, I hope we can see eye to eye on this. This is really important to me, and to the entire 12" PowerBook community. I don’t think saying “You owe it to us” is too strong. You do. Now c’mon and get this 12" MacBook Pro released.

Hugs & Kisses,

Adam Walker Cleaveland

I would say the problem is not about hardware and what size screen you want and if you want a macbook or a macbook pro. I would say the problem is software. Seriously Apple, I think it is time you dropped this whole proprietary thing. I applaud your decision to make the iPod Windows compatible, and look at the results. Apple dominates the MP3 market with unheard of levels of market share, and I would imagine that iTunes is the more popular music player on Windows whether you have an iPod or not. Let’s face it, Apple makes great Software. So please lets have it. Sell your individual programs for Windows, and allow us to install OSX on any computer we want. Sure, your hardware sales will fall, at first… but then they will go up in the long run. I know Dell is dying to sell OSX on its hardware.

    Peace,
    Tully

It gets me all emotional when I think back to the good ole days of my 12″ Powerbook. I would do anything for a 12″ MacBook Pro
