Pomomusings Gets a Facelift: Redesign Launched

Date February 5, 2007

Finally, it’s done.

I’m pretty happy with the way it turned out. I started this site with a Photoshop design, transferred it to XHTML and CSS and then into WordPress. And I had a lot of fun doing it as well. There are still many things I’m going to be working on in the next few days; primarily getting some content onto my new Pages (including the blogroll onto the Links page).

Please let me know what you think about the design. As far as I could tell using Browsershots, it looks pretty good in Firefox/Safari and in IE7 and IE6. The right two columns are slightly off in IE5.01 and IE5.5, but I’m not going to worry about that too much. No offense, but I doubt any of my readers are still using IE5x; if you are, I suggest that you try a new browser - because if my site doesn’t look like, I’m sure there are many sites that don’t look good.

Anyway - keep checking back over the next few days to see what new content shows up on the site. It feels good to have finally completed this redesign. I had hoped to do it over Christmas, but had I done that, it would not be as good as it turned out. I realized that I’ve learned a lot this past month with XHTML + CSS + WordPress, so it was good to wait. I hope you enjoy the new look.

Update: I realize that my sidebars are not acting properly in IE6 (surprise, surprise). Has anyone who uses IE6 noticed this? I am working to fix this, but…if it’s really bothering you, you could simply upgrade to IE7 and that will solve the problem.

Looking good. Clean and simple, which I like. I don’t see many 3 column designs that get pulled off properly, but I’d say that this is one.

I’d make a couple of suggestions: The little comments icon probably shouldn’t appear on a single page, since you’ve already tied the comments link to a conditional. Tie the icon to the same conditional, and probably one of the ” | ” characters as well.

I also feel like the borders around the dates for comments and around the meta section of the post are a bit jarring. Maybe dial them back to a mid-gray? That info just doesn’t seem as important as the high contrast you’re giving it.

The only reason I’m making anal-retentive suggestions like that is because this is quality work that could use just a touch of fit n finish. :)

Looks great, but one question: You’ve got a creative commons license AND a Copyright logo–which is it?

I like the design as well. I’m mostly a RSS reader, but I’m a web programmer, so I’ve started to check out the site for design aspects as well.

I just started my own blog, mainly for my school internship, so I’m new to the WordPress thing. Did you start with another theme, then modify it, or did you start this from scratch? I took my these then modified it (very slightly), to get what I wanted. I’m also more of a php programmer than a CSS designer, so my design lacks a little, but yours is defiantly top-notch.

    Great job.

I like the new design. Somehow you made the two columns not look crowded. Good job. The header is especially sharp.

One quick question. Does transferring the links or archives to a page require a plug in or some sort for WordPress? I just switched my blog to WordPress and I’d love to move all of my Archives to a page, but it doesn’t happen. I’m just wondering what you plan on using here. Thanks!
