WriteRoom: Distraction Free Writing
January 15, 2007

Now, I don’t normally blog about software - but WriteRoom, from Hog Bay Software, is a really fun program. One thing that took awhile to get used to when I switched over to my PowerBook was that Microsoft Word only took up part of the screen instead of the whole screen (like it does on PCs). I would always have to resize the window to make it “almost” fill the entire screen. I got used to it, and it doesn’t bother me anymore, but I liked that “full-screen” feel.
I’m also someone who gets distracted very easily. I’ve never been tested for ADD/ADHD, but…well, who knows. It’s possible. I’m especially distracted when I’m on my computer. I almost always have iChat and Mail open and so it’s hard for me to get things done, especially if I’m trying to write a paper or just write a blog entry. Now, you would be correct if you said I could just close those programs, or turn off my Airport and not be online and write. True. But, that’s no fun.
Then my friend Todd showed me WriteRoom. WriteRoom is a fun application. It basically takes the TextEdit program and makes it always open in a full screen window. The default setting is an old school Green on Black that’s very cool, but you can change all the settings and tailor it to your liking. It even integrates with your other word processing programs very well.
WriteRoom claims to be able to help you “overcome the challenge of the digital life…”
With so much e-mail and information pouring in, the digital life we lead can sure be a blur. If you’ve found it getting harder to focus on the words you want to write, if you’ve forgotten how great it feels to really write distraction-free, then let WriteRoom help you rediscover your muse.
I’m hoping that WriteRoom will help me rediscover my muse; but, even if it doesn’t, it’s still a fun program. I’m only using the trial mode right now, but it’s only $24.95, so go and try it out. Oh, and if you’re reading this blog on a PC (which you shouldn’t be, but that’s an entirely different topic), there is a similar program called Dark Room).

You should get tested for ADHD. I used to have a very difficult time reading because I was really distractable. I know this is off subject, but worth considering…

Cool, hey how much did you get paid for *this* ad? ;-)

This was a freebie. I wasn’t paid anything for this…but thanks for asking ;) The only posts that I get paid for have “Sponsored Post” either in the title or the body of the post…fyi.

I don’t know if I’m ADHD or what, but one of the best things about having a wide screen iMac is that I can be writing something in Word on the left side of the screen while I’m watching a DVD on the right.
