Standards & walkercleaveland.com

Date January 9, 2007

I’ve mentioned it before, but January is my month off. I’m trying to pick up a few more hours at SBL, but other than that, I have some web design & development reading I want to do, as well as plenty of actual web design & development. I’m currently working on two sites, and I’m excited about using some of the new things I’m learning on these sites.

Tonight I finished Jeffrey Zeldman’s Designing with Web Standards. I thought it would take me awhile but I really devoured the thing. After reading the book, approaching design with web standards in mind doesn’t seem as mind-boggling and that’s exciting for me. If you are looking for a book that not only gives you some great introductions to XHTML & CSS (as well as everything you’ll ever want to know about the history of browsers, DOCTYPES and other exciting things!), I highly recommend checking out Zeldman’s book. Next on the list for this week is Dan Cederholm’s Bulletproof Web Design.

After reading the book, I thought I’d practice a little bit and try to create an XHTML 1.0 Strict page and practiced on walkercleaveland.com. Not that you really need another site to go to, but I had fun fiddling around with the page. It’s really nothing more than links to my blog, Sarah’s blog and Cleave Design, but it was fun to create and it validates with XHTML 1.0 Strict.

In other news, Sarah keeps reminding me that this blog template is not that great. And I agree - it may be one of the better pre-made ones, but I won’t really be happy until I design my own theme. Should get around to that this month hopefully…
