MacWorld San Francisco 2007 Keynote Coverage

Date January 9, 2007

Steve Jobs will begin the 2007 MacWorld Keynote in about 20 minutes - it’s starts at 9am (PST). There are many places you can find predictions, but the place to watch during the Keynote address is MacRumorsLive.com - they will be having up-to-the-minute coverage and photos. I’ll watch the video of the keynote later today, but while at work, I’ll be checking out MacRumorsLive. There are some things I’m hoping for (12″ MacBook Pro, Leopard, Apple’s iPhone) - and while the keynote is going on, I’ll post some of my highlights here - but for the full coverage, be sure and check out MacRumorsLive.

  • Paramount Pictures becomes a new partner with Apple for movies on iTunes (this means an additional 250 movies now available)
  • Apple TV: Watch media content (video, movies, photos, music) from your computer on your TV. You can transmit the data via Wireless - has a 40gb hard drive which you use iTunes to sync movies to - looks pretty hot. Use your Apple remote to operate. $299
  • iPhone: iPhone has a giant 3.5″ screen (finger touch control - ignores accidental touches, can tell about multi-finger gestures), runs OS X, has all your favorite software, sits in a dock and Syncs your music, movies, podcasts, email, contacts, calendars, sleep switch, SIM card, bottom speaker, mic, 11/16″ thin, “home” button. When you turn it on, it can tell if it’s being held in portrait or landscape mode. There is a Cingular logo on top, so that means it’s gonna work fine when I insert my Cingular SIM card into it (…Adam wakes up from his dream now…)! iPod looks amazing. Apps look great. Safari for full-screen web browsing (connects to Wifi). A photo app just like iPhoto - beautiful for browsing photos. Mail program looks just like Apple Mail. IMAP email, Google Maps, widgets. I could go on and on. This looks like an amazing device. When making a call, it looks like you can scroll through your contact list with CoverFlow technology. Beautiful.GSM + Edge, Wifi Bluetooth, Quad Band, Visual Voicemail (just touch the screen for what Voice Mail you want to hear). $499 (4GB) or $599 (8GB)
  • Apple Inc.: Apple has now changed it’s name to Apple Inc. Since they have now stepped beyond the world of just computers (iPod, iTV, iPhone), they felt a name change was appropriate.

Final thoughts: Not too sure about Apple TV - looks cool, but I don’t have that “damn I need that” feeling that the iPhone gives me. iPhone is an amazing device. Browsing from your phone anywhere there is a wireless signal. The phone/internet/email/photos/movies package is just too great. I know it’s seriously out of my price range for now, but…one day. To quote a good friend of mine on what happened at MacWorld today, “Apple changed the world today, my son. And you got to witness it. Of course, Mac users have been watching the world change like this for many years now… feels good to be on the side of truth and beauty, eh?” Yes it does Andrew. Yes it does.

I’m wondering…Is it hard to remember when you were a PC nerd instead of a Apple (Inc.) nerd?

Pitter patter goes the heart for the iPhone. This is perhaps the worst crush on a digital device since the 4 year crush I had on what would become my Powerbook G4. That lasted nearly 5 years and several innovations before I could afford one. How long must we wait now…

I found this article interesting: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/2007/01/12/rob_enderle_on-the_iphone/

“The final surprise won’t come from Apple but it will be the competitive response to this phone. Apple has just scared a large number of very powerful companies half to death. This is one of the few ways you can get big companies to move and, be sure, they will move. Whether or not the iPhone is a success, it dramatically changes the playing field.”
