Done.
December 14, 2006
Not to rub it in the face of my fellow Princeton colleagues, but…I am done with school. Final projects and papers turned in - done. And since I’m not taking a Jan-term course, I’m free until February 5th. And it will be glorious. I plan on doing a fair amount of cleave design work, working on some blog stuff, reading whatever the hell I want to read, working at SBL and enjoying my break.
It’s good to be done. I was not a fan of this semester’s classes (except for Men in Ministry) but I’m looking forward to next semester much more. Both Sarah and I are ready for this break…it’s much needed.
And we are spending it doing the “newlywed Christmas tour” once again. We’re spending the next two days driving to Rochester, NY to then get on a plane and fly to Seattle (get this: with a layover IN ATLANTA…). We’ll be with my family in Chehalis for a week and then fly back to Rochester, where we’ll be with Sarah’s family for Christmas Eve and Christmas and for about a week. Then we drive back to Decatur for New Year’s Eve. Yes. Exciting times to be on the road! :) I’m excited to see both my family and Sarah’s, but…they must know that splitting Christmas can’t last forever…it will be hard, but…it’s just a lot of traveling.
So we’re off. Sorry the blog has been lacking recently. I’m a bit wiped from the semester and my brain is not coming up with anything too funny, exciting or controversial. I’m hoping to get some good reading done this break (David James Duncan’s “The Brothers K,” Rilke’s “Book of Hours: Love Poems to God“
and I’m finally getting around to finishing AKMA’s “Faithful Interpretation: Reading the Bible in a Postmodern World
“). Hopefully the books will give me some good fodder to blog about…
And while we’re on the road, here are some things for you to check out:
- Christian Century now has a blog…could be good…
- Mark has a very good suggestion for emergingchurchblogs.info - only pull the emergent categories feed…
- Jen’s all growed up apparently
- In the spirit of “end of the year lists,” Fadtastic documents The Web in 2006
- Marko posts a very cool video, check it out.
- My wife has a new sermon on her blog.
- Josh is being vulnerable on his blog…

Having the freedom to read whatever you want is a joy that can never be understated!

Duncan’s The Brothers K is simply one of the finest, most moving books I have ever read. I love baseball and religion, and there’s a lot of both in the book. Enjoy it.

Rilke’s Love Poems are my most moving meditation work. I want to cry out, “DON’T TRY TO READ THEM ALL OVER THE BREAK! SPREAD THEM OUT OVER THE YEAR! MEDITATE OVER THEM! THE MONKS WOULD!” They are soothing and filling- I hope you find them satiating.
