Men in Ministry Manly Mountain Retreat

Date December 1, 2006

I’m off to North Georgia this weekend for the retreat for my Men in Ministry class. We’re spending the weekend in a place that is supposed to be absolutely gorgeous…mountains, waterfalls, hikes, poker…”man time.” The retreat center is supposed to be great…it’s called the Come Rest Awhile Retreat Center. I’m a little intrigued about their description of the place:

The Come Rest Awhile Retreat Center was designed and built principally to provide a place for clergy and other soldiers in God’s army to come apart and rest awhile.

Hmm. Not so down with the idea of becoming a soldier, but….should be a good retreat. Pictures will be forthcoming…

UPDATE: It’s not my fault if the Retreat Center has wireless right? And I mean, if they happen to give me the password? That’s not bad is it? Anyway, in case you want to catch some photos, check out these here.

I was terribly disturbed by your post. Disturbed enough that I went rushing to dictionary.com, where I discovered the following:

Usage Note: Awhile, an adverb, is never preceded by a preposition such as for, but the two-word form a while may be preceded by a preposition. In writing, each of the following is acceptable: stay awhile; stay for a while; stay a while (but not stay for awhile).

So I am much chagrined. Turns out the retreat center’s usage is correct. Guess you can go there and relax now.

The live bookmark in my side bar shows the title of this post as “Men in Mini. . .” I can’t tell how disappointed I was that the full title didn’t involve miniskirts.

I suppose using the wireless is legit, but it’s not very manly or “mountainish” — once a metrosexual, always a metrosexual?

Checking out the pics… I see LOTS of awfully artsy pics of the river and the rod, flies, etc. and your pretty awkward looking casting… But I sure didn’t see a single Rainbow or Brownie! (Forget about Brook trout in that water!)

It’s December and the Toccoa is an EASTERN trout river… get rid of all the beatiful flies and streamers, put on a sinking leader and a nymph (like a gold ribbed hare’s ear or a black stonefly nymph) and you might (might — that casting is a bit suspicious!) actually catch one!

Have fun anyway! (It’s not the catching that’s important… it’s the fishing for them.)

I am totally stoked because in a few days I will be visiting friends in Northeast Georgia. I will be in Northeast Georgia from Dec 6 (Wed) to Dec 10 (Sun). I’ll be in the Athens, Royston / Hartwell, and Marietta area.

Bro. Was there warpaint? A drum circle?

In spite of the less than ideal circumstances there, I hope God’s was present to you somehow.

Well it does talk about in the Bible “We wrestle not angainst flesh and blood but against principalities and power and rulers of this dark and present evil age.” or “The weapons of our warfare are not carnel but for the pulling down of strongholds.” or even the Apostle Paul talking about “putting on the armour of God.” To say we are not “soldiers in God’s army” seems different than what God’s Word says about the subject.

    Adam,

Glad to hear that you got to go to the mountains. I love that area as well, although I prefer to hop the border and go to Smokey Mountain National for all my camping and hiking needs. Beautiful area though!

    Blessings,
