I received a great new CD in the mail today: Leigh Nash’s solo debut album Blue on Blue (Leigh was the lead singer from Sixpence None the Richer). I’ve been a Sixpence fan since their beginning as a contemporary Christian band. The last time I saw Sixpence perform was Creation West ‘03 with my youth group from Idaho. I’ve always loved Leigh’s voice, so it was great to be given the chance to check out the CD and give a couple away (yes, that’s right: but you’ll have to keep on reading).
Leigh’s had many changes in her life recently, from moving to LA with her husband and son, Henry. This album is put out by Nettwerk Records on Leigh’s imprint record label, One Son (just one more acknowledgment of how important her son is to her). The album is great - and Leigh’s voice is the same beautiful, gentle and ethereal voice I’ve missed the past couple years. Her songs talk a lot about the relationship she has as a mother to her young son. One song, "Just a Little" talks about leaving Henry for the first time.
I’m glad that we didn’t lose Leigh’s voice after the breakup of Sixpence, but it’s clear that Leigh is not just staying where she was comfortable with the Sixpence-style, but she is forming a new style: one that reflects the depth of her past styling but one that is opening up all sorts of new musical creativity.
Nettwerk has provided a few links for your enjoyment:
- A live song performed in LA recently with the story behind the song (MP3)
- The same thing as above in streaming format
- A "Leigh Player" where you can preview the new album and other fun stuff
- Buy the album here - it’s not as cheap as iTunes, but it’s cheaper than Amazon by $2
CONTEST OVER: The winners were Rich Wagner, Blair D. Sullivan and Josh Cleaveland. After the third winner came in, I had two more emails, so it was all really close. Sorry for those of you who didn’t get it in time. It’s a great CD to purchase though. Nettwerk has given me 3 CD to give away. And once again, you’re going to have to do some internet searching. Leigh is currently involved in a network of musicians associated with a certain city in the US. This group of musicians want to dispel a certain myth about music from this certain city. In order to win 1 of the 3 CDs available, I need the name of this network of musicians that Leigh belongs to, the myth they are trying to dispel, as well as the 7 other members/group belonging to this network. Once you have all of this, please email me with the info, and I’ll announce the winners (if you won Pete Rollins’ book a few weeks ago, you’re not eligible for this contest).
