Upcoming Travels
August 8, 2006
Sarah and I are getting ready to do some traveling this month, back to the "Right" Coast out West. On August 18th we head to Centralia, WA for a Walker Cleaveland Reception that my parents have been so great to put on for us. We will also get to be at the wedding of one of Sarah’s best friends - it will be a quick but great weekend. Then on August 31st we fly out to Boise, Idaho. I have to do some ordination/candidacy stuff in Wendell, ID and so we’re using it as a chance to get a vacation. We’ll rent a car in Boise in drive to Spokane, WA, visit my alma mater and be in Spokane for a few days. I think we’re gonna be checking out the church my sister goes to, Vintage Faith [I know, the name is 'vaguely' familiar, but we'll forgive them...]. (Just noticed the church meets in the evening and we have to leave Spokane that afternoon - hmm, we’ll have to worship somewhere else in Spokane…)
Then we’re off to Glacier National Park for a few days. After hiking and camping, we’ll be driving down to Idaho and spending a few days in the Magic Valley (Hagerman, Wendell, Jerome, Twin Falls) and loving every minute of it. Meeting with my Committee on Preparation for Ministry should be interesting, but…oh well. You gotta love jumping through the denominational hoops.
Anyone familiar with Montana really well? We’re trying to decide between possibly staying in Butte and Dillon, MT. Anyone have a preference?
Anyway - it will be good to get out of the humidity of the south for a few weeks.

i’ve stayed in butte before…all i remember is there’s a k-mart and if you’re not camping there, DO NOT stay in the rainbow motel (or inn, i can’t remember). horrible. the reason i know there’s a k-mart is because we had to go there to buy bug spray to kill all the bugs in our towels and sheets and a candle to mask the horrendous smell.

You are more than welcome to worship at St. Mark;s Lutheran Church.
Besides, it would be cool to meet Sarah face to face.
Send me a quick e-mail if you’re interested.

Well it’s taken something I feel passionately about to finally post a comment. Glacier National Park is one of the most beautiful locations I’ve ever seen. It has been several years since our last visit, but we specifically planned a fall trip so that we could be there when the bald eagles were feeding on the salmon. I have been trying to find more information to share about the bridge in the park where we stood and watched, but it looks like the salmon population has collapsed. Now a favorite viewing site is near Helena.

Helena is an awesome town as well. We did not stay in Butte nor Dillon.
I never understood why Montana had the nickname “Big Sky Country.” Sky is sky, right? NO WAY! It’s different and it’s spectacular. I live in Texas and we should have big sky as well, but it’s not the same.
Photos! Photos!

Not Butte! Anywhere but Butte! If you want to find a great disc golf course, it would also not be in Butte. However, there’s a pretty cool campground outside Butte (maybe southeast…up in the mountains a little). Dillon I don’t know about, but I wouldn’t recommend Butte. Bozeman is cool, though. Oh, and if you want a truly random Montana experience, check out the hostel in East Glacier (above Brownie’s)…next door is the Whistle Stop Cafe, where they have the best huckleberry pie ever. Just a tip. Oh, the best part: the hostel used to be a brothel. It looks like it, too. In a fun, rustic Montana way.
