Isn’t it true that when one things goes, other things are likely to as well? Well, so it goes these past few days. While my Powerbook’s hard drive was being fried, my Z520a phone started to automatically turn itself off every time I closed it, and other times when it was just sitting in my pocket. Funny little guy. He decided to do it about 20x this morning, finally causing me to call Cingular and figure out how to get a replacement phone. How wonderful…
By the way, the favorite comment I received when I broke the news of my Powerbook’s hard drive dying was courtesy of my father: “Dad, my hard drive is toast.” “What?! Adam!? That thing is practically brand new! [note: it is actually 2 years old] Why, our old Dell is still kicking just fine!” To put this in context for you, I’ve been trying to convince my parents to replace their 5-7yr old Dell with an iMac, and they’ve been a bit skeptical. This news certainly isn’t helping my sales-pitch.
Oh well. Sarah is generally the reader between the two of us, but I read The Da Vinci Code yesterday and I’m working my way through Harry Potter: The Half-Blood Prince today, should be finished by tomorrow. Getting lost in a different world through a book has helped me stop thinking about the lost data on the computer, although every now and then I think, “Oh, I need to do …. oh crap, yup. Lost that as well.” I did have many of my documents and stuff backed up as of the end of April, but I’ve done a lot on the computer since then, so…so, all is not lost. And like Sarah said, “You get a new computer in a few days!” Kind of. It is sort of like spring cleaning. I remember the first time my computer crashed in college, and I lost the thousands of emails I kept in my Inbox. That was the end of that; from that point on I entered the world of READ-REPLY-DELETE/FILE. It was beautiful, and I’ve never turned back since then (we’re all still hoping my mom will find that world soon, with her thousands and thousands of emails in the Inbox). So, who knows. Maybe this incident will teach me to become better at backup (thanks to Andrew for the hat-tip to the best backup program around, Super Duper).
At any rate, thank you for your prayers. I am surviving…
