Psych Evals: Pt 1

Psych evals. I have a lot to do this week. What you ask? Well, I’m glad you did. Here is the list of what I have to do BEFORE I get to my psych eval on January 25th: a confidentiality form, autobiographical questionnaire, statement of personal conduct, self-reporting health record, report of physician, 3 personal references, sentence completion, myers-briggs, 16 PF, Cambell interest and skill-survey analysis, inventory of meaningful ability, supervisor evaluation and finally, reflections on faith journey. Then I have about 6 hours scheduled at the career and counseling center, along with taking more tests there, including the MMPI-2.

Pretty exciting, huh?

Well, I just finished the sentence completion part, and let me tell you, that was fun. It’s pretty fun completing sentences that begin with:

  • Because of my father…
  • Because of my mother…
  • In sexual fantasies…
  • As a man, I…
  • A wife…
  • Marriage…
  • My greatest problem with men…
  • My greatest problem with women…

So. Yes! On to the next part…

oh! watch OUT for those completion things. my psychologist said “your answers were clever, but you came across as hostile to this process of evaluation.” to which i responded “i AM hostile to this process!” :)

my psych eval. looked good though, regardless…

Adam,

As someone who went through the process at NCCC (I am assuming that is where you are heading) last summer, I must say I did not find it particulary pleasant, but then again nor did I think it was a nightmare. It actually was an interesting look inside myself. My report came back quickly (less than two weeks) and had no identified problems. I wish I could say that for everyone who goes through the process. Many people wait for more than a month for the report. You will have the chance to see your report and comment on it before it is issued. Be honest, but be careful! The psychologist is working for the Presbytery - not you.

God’s Grace,

Tim

At least there’s nothing in there about farm animals.

So, I don’t get it…what are they looking for??? Psychological Evaluations to determine if someone is fit for ministry ???? What’s that really going to tell anyone?? Like someone commented previously, you can’t do this battery of testing without having something wrong with you…it’s just not possible because of the way the tests are written. And let’s not forget that testing is all you do for 6 hours….you start getting ansy and you have ADD, start sweating or gripping your pencil tight and you have an anxiety disorder, take time outs to just sit and relax then clearly you are dissociating, oh and if you try and talk out of turn to the Psychologist- well then you have a personality disorder(and as all of us counselor/psych type folks know from school-you can’t treat a personality disorder!!).

Sorry I’m on by soapbox but this is BS. I’m a therapist and I see crap like this all the time with the kids I work with. I’d rather someone come see me on their own time versus be forced to do work they either aren’t ready for or don’t need to do. OK-I’m shutting up now.

Oh, good luck I guess :~)

I wonder how many people get by with lying on these psych exams … and I wonder what this tells the world about me asking this question. I wonder why people still ask questions like these:

My greatest problem with men…
My greatest problem with women…

I think I’m going to ask questions during my psych eval rather than answer them and see how I come out …
