Sister Gertrude

Date November 6, 2005

One thing that I love about hanging out with cool people (like Jonny Baker) is that you get fun music recommendations. Jonny used a song from this album in the alt.worship service a few nights ago, and I just downloaded it from iTunes. It’s sweet stuff. The deal is, you have to go here and read the story about this woman, Sister Gertrude Morgan. Basically she was a woman who used to wear a white nurse’s uniform and wander the streets of New Orleans with a tambourine and sing gospel songs and served as a street preacher. Someone recorded her before she died in 1980 (she lived from 1900-1980), and recently someone contacted King Britt (a DJ from Philly) about doing a remix version of Sister Gertrude’s music.

Basically, it’s Moby meets black gospel music - and it’s hot. Jonny used the track “Living Bread” in the alt.worship and it was great. It’s a great recommendation and definitely has given me some good paper-writing music these past few days. Thanks again Jonny.
