alt.worship @ Princeton
November 4, 2005

Last night we had our second alternative worship experience at Princeton Seminary. Jonny Baker and Karen Ward led us in an alt.worship service. If you are interested in the tunes and info about the video loops that Jonny used, go check out his post. It was one of the more refreshing experiences I’ve had recently. I actually worshipped last night, which just doesn’t happen all that often for me, which is great. The last few alt.worship events I’ve led, that’s the thing: I led them, and I haven’t quite figured out how to lead these events yet, and be able to engage and enter into worship myself - I think watching Jonny lead has helped me some with that, and it was a true blessing to have that time to worship last night. A few more pictures are below:

I came to the alt.worship with high expectations. I definitely was in need of the opening ‘Chill’ time. I often ponder ways to help myself and others live in the present moment. The entire worship experience, especially the breathing in/out, led me there. Jonny, Karen, Adam, and the team did a great job in creating a space for all of us to worship.
I continue, however, to wrestle with how an alternate worship experience like last night’s can provide a true alternative to the ‘normal’ Lord’s Supper (eucharist, communion) experience. The focus of “come to the table” together was, once again, overtaken by the individual “me and Jesus” motif that dominates the Lord’s Supper in Protestant churches. Is there a way that we capture the one loaf, one body, one table experience?
I have some other thoughts on this at http://thoughtsasigo.blogspot.com on “eating alone”… I’d love to hear any thoughts on this that people have…
