The best feeling…

Date October 7, 2005

It won ‘t last - but THIS is one of the best feelings. I like to READ, REPLY and then either FILE or DELETE. I can’t stand having a full Inbox. Really, one of my worst pet peeves - and it makes me all antsy, and stressed. I know some people get hundreds of emails a day, and I don’t know if I could handle that. If there are 10 or under emails, I’m happy - but days like this. When the Inbox is empty. Wow. You know it’s a good day…

What does everyone else do with their Inbox? Any habits…?

I’m right there with you. I’ve got close to twenty in my Inbox now, and it’s driving me nuts. It’s because I’ve been “reading” without “replying” so much lately. But, yes, as my fellow anal brethren, I like everything to be clean and crisp and controlled.

i’m like 700 emails deep in my inbox right now. i never get rid of anything, unless it’s really cursory “so we’re meeting at what time” kind of emails.

I feel like that every day when I clear out my email inbox. How many inboxes do we have? Email account A, Email account B, Voicemail, mailbox at school, other mailbox, bills pile…

I wonder what percentage of our daily energy is used for clearing out these ‘boxes’?

Yep I am the same. David Allen in his book Getting things done pushes hard this very issue.

I get to an empty inbox as quickly as I can. It does not mean I have done everything that the emails are requesting but I have processed the inbox to create tasks and notes etc.

The only way I get to a clean inbox is by having a “To Review” folder. Then, every time I check my mail, I have three options: 1) delete permanently, 2) reply and file, or 3) put in the review folder.

And yeah, I learned that from David Allen.

My inbox at work I’m able keep at empty or next-to-empty. At home-OMG. I’m overcoming 10 years of bad email filing.

Yes, once again, for awareness of the problem, one more credit goes to David Allen.

    hmmmm.

one of my favorite topics. in fact, i’m kinda pissed i haven’t blogged about it (but i’m on another blogging sabattical now)…

me: i get around 200 emails a day. i HATE to have my inbox full. so my inbox is basically my ‘task list’ if you will. it motivates me to get things done as quickly as possible. daily, i go through and reply, delete and file (yeah, yeah, i read david allen’s book also)… and it basically is a judge of how productive i’m being. i always have to clean out the box every night (even if its 1am like now) - guess what i just got through doing before reading blogs? ah-huh. you got it.

good work. cheers. now i’m guilty because i have 20 emails in my box i can’t do anything about. always tomorrow….

I wish your mother subscribed to that practice of read and delete……
