A pomomusings poll

Date September 8, 2005

So, I had to blog about this before my loving fiancée did. These are my new Crocs. I first saw them on my buddy Jamey last year. And now they’re getting big and it’s kind of a fad but I tried them on and they are very comfortable. And one of Sarah’s close friends down here at Columbia loves them - and…and…

…and Sarah says I can’t wear them around here. I mean, they are kind of goofy looking - she thinks they’re hideous. Like, really, really bad. So, it looks like I may only be able to wear my lovely new Crocs up in Princeton. So, here are the questions:

1. Are Crocs weird and ugly looking?
2. Should Adam be able to wear his Crocs down here in Atlanta too?

Crocs are ugly and we should burn them all like the fundies burned records back in the 60s.

    Certainly a no no

Wear whatever you want, but know you’ll look stupid in them. That’s just my opinion, which you asked for.

adam, i injured my heel and have been wearing my crocs for a month. they are incredibly comfortable though a bit unsightly to some. even preached in them one sunday, which albeit physically comfortable left me feeling otherwise a bit odd. my vote - wear them out.

“Are Crocs weird and ugly looking?” . . . um, they’re called “Crocs.”

hmmmmm. what size do you wear…huh….i mean….definitely out of style. yes. so….why not give them to me cause….you know……you don’t want to be wasteful, right?

Adam, when I was at Whitworth I fashioned a pair of sandals out of some old tennis shoes. My then girlfriend, now wife, hated them, but tolerated them. She never made me throw them away. I did finally get rid of them some years later, not because of her opinion but because I had decided it was time to do so. I say if they make your feet happy wear them, they deserve to be happy. There are much bigger battles worth fighting in your future, Sarah will understand, I’m sure.

In other news, congratulations to you both. May God bless you as you enter into this new chapter in life.

    Weird and ugly. And weird.

  12. dave said:

Wierd and ugly…but definitely a yes! Wear them.

But know that once you say “I Do” you will probably be throwing them away! Trust me…I have been there! :)

The words “Ugly as sin” come to mind.

Sarah sounds like a wise woman…listen to her.

Being from both ATL and PTS, my vote is a big negative to both. Why not just grab a pair of Sarah’s old jellies and save the 30 bucks?

  15. wezlo said:

    1. Yes they are ugly but that’s your preference so who cares.

    2. If you want to get the living {censored} kicked out of you, let it be for a reason other than fashion trends, ok?

  16. Dan said:

Elton John lives in Atlanta, and he would probably be envious of these shoes and desire to wear them.

  17. bec said:

Ugly as anything - and will be no matter how fashionable they become.

But if she REALLY loves you…;)

  18. Jon said:

    1. Yes, very ugly, very weird.
    2. Yes, Adam should be able to wear his ugly shoes wherever the heck he wants. We just have to remember not to look down.

i live in atlanta and wear crocs. brown ones. chocolate, i think they call them. the red ones are a bit loud, but you wear what you want. if others don’t want to experience the comfort of walking like we do, it’s their choice. shame and disappointment.

  20. RPS said:

Hell Adam: You’ve already posted pics of you wearing skirts on campus — you really think something as ugly as this on your feet is gonna raise eyebrows? (Any more than they are already raised?)

  21. Existential Punk said:

    1. No more so than Birkenstocks and i wear those.

    2. Yes. She ought to love and accept you and your choice of style. I mean, you aren’t wanting to run around nude or with your butt crack showing are you? GO FOR IT!!!!!

  22. joelt said:

i’ve seen jason in his crocs…let’s just say not everyone can pull it off! are they really that comfortable?

    Plastic shoes are never right.

crocs are the MOST INCREDIBLY comfy shoes in the world.

    1. yes they are weird and ugly
    2. yes, you should wear them despite 1

  25. jason said:

wear ‘em all the time even to the office - get some looks and comments, but who cares? do i really care what people think of what i’m wearing? they’re TOO comfortable and i actually think they’re good looking too - might be a fad, but what isn’t?

  26. Phil Boardman said:

    1. yes
    2. dinners out will be cheaper, though less interesting and a little more embarassing

  27. your sister said:

i don’t know–i think they’re kinda cute. go for it, bro.

  28. Josh said:

Another downfall, bro…I hear they stink horribly after awhile…and with your feet…I dunno. ;)

Adam, send your shoes to Hurricane Katrina relief. Send your socks and a new pack of underwear, too.

  30. Trudi Bils said:

    Butt ugly. Loose them NOW.

  31. myels said:

ditch them. they remind me of the waffle blocks i had as a kid. brown and comfy shoes never go out of style.

  32. Andrew Domenic Gazaneo said:

    they look like girl shoes

  33. Bill said:

Without any prompting, this is what my almost four year-old son said when he saw the picture:

“Those are beautiful. I wish mommy could get them.”

You can interpret that however you want.

  34. Ditch said:

    1) Ugly
    2) Atlanta is a LONG way from me, so if I don’t have to see them, go for it.

I’m kind of speechless. The support of readers is something that has always been very important to me here at pomomusings.com - and now — and now — I see the readers turning against me. I don’t know what to say - I may think about quitting this blog now ;)

Well…I’ll be wearing them up at Princeton anyway - so Becca - get ready…

  36. joel said:

Adam, i think jennifer R’s point is quite good and could be the catalyst for a new, more poignant area of study: the juxtposition of shoes and plastic. You could use Myles position — “brown and comfy” — as the antithesis of your research.

And if you do, be sure to bring the academic integrity;)

there was a great cheers episode in which cliff presented the argument that all great people in history were great because of their shoes. he sighted plato and his sandals as an example.

you cant beat them for comfort. you chose red, but i would expect nothing less from you.

imagine if someone told dorothy that her shoes were ugly because they were red…

Interesting conversation, for me it raises a couple of very interesting questions:

    a) if enough people wear an agly pair of shoes do they cease to be ugly?

    b) further to the last question, if a tonne of people wear a pair of ugly shoes do they cease to be ugly and begin to be a fashionable item?

    c) if a pair of shoes are comfortable does that mean that they are now ok to wear? does uglyness cease to be an issue if what we are wearing are comfortable.

I couldnt see myself even attempting to wear a pair, but then again they seem like shoes that, if i were to accidently leave in my car during summer would melt into a puddle of red, melted plastic…

..is this another of your magnificent April Fool’s jokes…either late or early? I really think if you are a man, you should go barefoot. :)

  40. Tammy Jo said:

goofy? thats right. . those are the exact shoes that Goofy wears.. . whats next? sailor shirts and no pants?

  41. June Cleaveland said:

yup, Adam, they are Nurse’s shoes. At least they sold like hot cakes at the last uniform fair held recently at our hospital…tho, I must admit, it wasn’t only nurses that were buying them. Personally I think they are very unattractive (wierd and ugly)and not all that comfortable. I wouldn’t vote for wearing them in Atlanta or Princeton.

Go with a pair of metro’s or highland. A nice neutral color and you’ll be fine.
That said my beloved girlfriend wore her bright orange ones to church this morning
