Top 10 Reasons to Transfer to Columbia Theological Seminary

Date February 7, 2005

After vising Columbia Theological Seminary in Decatur, GA this past weekend, I realized it’s a pretty sweet school. Going somewhere else to visit always makes you wonder what it would be like if you had actually chosen a different place. But I didn’t…and I’m at Princeton and I am glad I am (although, there are times when Princeton really pisses me off). At any rate, here are the Top 10 Reaons to Transfer to Columbia Theological Seminary.

10. The fact that it was 60 degrees and beautiful in Decatur, GA while it was mid-50s and snowy and slushy…

9. Dr. Anna Carter Florence.

8. Their “Refectory” looks like the eating hall from Hogwarts…

7. Decatur, GA. Need I say more…?

6. A pretty campus…

5. Dr. Barbara Brown Taylor.

4. The Square with all the cool eateries including Birdie’s and a great sushi place that some people really don’t like…

3. It’s a school that actually has some theological diversity (although, I heard that, unlike PTS, they are lacking in strong evangelicals)…

2. Dr. Walter Brueggemann

and now for the #1 reason to transfer to Columbia Theological Seminary…

Mark Shivers!

Well…Mark is a pretty good reason, but my personal #1 reason for constantly debating transferring to CTS is right here…

You had me convinced at DECATUR GA!!!!

It is ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL there!!!!! If it weren’t for me passionately dislikeing Emory, I’d still be there. I LOVED the area!

It does get cold in GA, but only for a little bit in January…other than that I don’t remeber it being all that cold, but it does rain a lot and horribly sometimes…

are you kidding me? You love Decatur? It has a couple of nice points, but this is some seriously backwards country. Caveat Emptor.

Went to a conference in my synod a couple of years ago where Brueggemann spoke on stewardship and it was seriously good.

yeah I was serious about loving Decatur. It’s beautiful…yes a little backwards and, for lack of a better descriptor, southern, but it’s a beautiful area, and it’s close enough to ATL that you can escape to the sanity of the big city pretty easily, which is not so backward and southern.

The again, I lived in the part of Decatur where Emory U was…not whre Columbia was…but seriously, there are some awesome places to see in that are…for instance, little 5…

i’m going to resist the temptation to rant about the backward-ness of Atlanta (yes, the whole damn thing) on someone else’s blog. If ya’ll love decatur, you can have it.

While I appreciate the sentiment, I must quibble with # 8. I’ve seen both CTS and the actual inspiration for Hogwarts’ dining hall–Christ Church College in Oxford (or was it one of the others? I can’t remember now). Anyway, Columbia … not so much. :)

Side note: The same dining hall also inspired parts of Alice in Wonderland … or so the tour guide says.
