I’m out of town this weekend down in Atlanta. I’m going down to a conference called In Word and Deed: Working for a Just Peace in Palestine-Israel, A Conference for Peacemakers. This conference is put on by FOSNA (Friends of Sabeel North America), which is kind of the North American branch of Sabeel. Sabeel describes itself on its website, and here is a basic introduction to the organization based in Jerusalem:
Sabeel is an ecumenical grassroots liberation movement among Palestinian Christians. It’s an ecumenical center for Palestinian Liberation Theology which seeks to make the Gospel contextually relevant. In Arabic Sabeel means ‘The Way’ and also a ‘Spring of Water’. Sabeel strives to develop a spirituality based on justice, peace, nonviolence, liberation and reconciliation for the different national and faith communities. Sabeel also works to promote a more accurate international awareness regarding the identity, presence, and witness of Palestinian Christians.
I’m really looking forward to going and making some contacts for my time in Israel-Palestine this summer. The founder of Sabeel will be there, and it’ll be good to met him and learn more about the ministry and peace-making programs they have going on over there. Plans are underway and I’ll be blogging more about it as I come to find more out.
