Seasons of love!

Yesterday my mom, sister and I decided to get tickets for Rent, as it was playing at the Paramount in Seattle. So we met my dad up in Olympia, sprung the news on him, and spent the day shopping. I’m very excited to get to sleep in my new bed next week at Princeton, with a nice new Pacific Coast, Year Round Warmth, 300 thread count, sateen cotton, white goose down comforter with 575 fill power and a baffle box design. I also picked up some GAP shirts and shirts from the Bon that were 40% off an already 50%-off price. Not bad. Anyway, we got up to see Rent, and…I’m not sure it was really what my mom was expecting. She really liked some of the music, but, other than that…After Act One, I turned around and realized that my dad really did not want to be there, a bit too bawdy, a little too much profanity, music a bit too loud, etc. I think my sister liked some of it.

I thought it was great. Fabulous music, choreography, set, acting, characters. Sure it was sexy, sultry, unorthodox, and there was tons of sexualized-images, and profanity, but at the same time, it was a really beautiful thing. It felt so real, so raw, so energized, so full with the emotion and turbulence of the lives of these characters. There were a few songs that really got me. Of course, Seasons of Love was just as good as I’d hoped for. Roger and Mimi’s duet in Another Day was absolutely gorgeous, and Santa Fe was just a lot of fun to hear. Although, I have to give it to my favorite character, Maureen. Maureen is currently being played by pop singer/songwriter AvA (pictured at right), and despite being gorgeous, she has a simply amazing voice, which coupled with her girlfriend in the play, Joanne, they did an amazing song in Act Two, Take Me or Leave Me. So, now not only am I a Rent fan, but I’m a fan of AvA! (I just emailed her, we’ll see if she comes and checks out pomomusings)…

Update!!: AvA DID come and check out my site and just emailed me. She said: “Wow, thanks for the incredible compliment and the great review! I’m hoping your parents stuck with it and could look past the fact that theres some crazy lesbian bearing her ass and understood the beautifull message of the show, as you did…I checked out your site, it was fun, thanks for the link! I’m going to add you to my mailing list so you can be notified of any upcoming events. Thanks again, and I’m glad you enjoyed the show! -AvA*”

Hey very cool…I’ve wanted to see RENT for years now, just never had the chance…Usually my friends and i want to see something “classier” like Mama Mia (going to see on 8th of Sept) Actually, i would like to BE in a production like RENT…what a rush!

Anyway, found a link to your site from a freind of mine who was really challenged by something you said in your eariler blog. Very intrigued by your blog site. Keep it up!

hey there, adam. it’s been a while since i’ve been around your blog. i’ve missed reading what you have to say. and i totally agree with your thoughts on rent. i’ve seen it 3 times and it has to be my alltime favorite musical. the themes of community are intense. it really speaks to how we live in a culture where friends have truly become family.

hope all is well with you. when do you head out to nj?

Glad you liked it, bro…

But did you moo…you’ve gotta moo…or is that just a Broadway thing?

Adam 08.28.04 at 3:59 pm

Andrew, you never know bro. You never know ;)
Cheryl, I begin the drive next Friday (9.3.04) and will pull out to the front of Andrew’s house on the evening of the 7th, and move into my dorm on the 8th. Classes start the 15th. Isn’t Rent wonderful…
Josh. Yes, I mooed. AvA made us all moo…it was beautiful…

Trust me - once you’ve seen RENT once, you have to see it again (I’m going on my 4th show. Touring RENTs are fantastic, but there’s no RENT like Broadway RENT, and it’s even better if you have the $20 rush tickets. Check it out when you’re on the East Coast in the fall.

I’m a Rent junkie. I took my wife to see it for the first time on Broadway for our anniversary (it was my fourth time seeing it, the others being in Columbus, Nashville, and London). It was great! And Mimi was play by Scary Spice. :) Fun.
