Mudhouse Sabbath across the state…
July 3, 2004
Just got in to Hagerman, ID a few hours ago - staying with my host-family for the weekend. My host-sister took over my old room and so now I am in my same bed, but it’s in her old room. Anyway…it was fun to drive up…get out, and just walk in and be greeted by my host-parents. I realized it was exactly 2 years ago to the date that I drove down here to Idaho before speaking at Niners Camp 2002 (same camp I’m doing this upcoming week) and met my host-family for the very first time. It was fun to sort of re-live that drive today, and pulling up to the house. Against the advice of my mother (and many others), I again read books during my 10-hr drive. It’s funny to see all the disapproving looks I receive from fellow drivers…some laugh, but most just look at me with utter disgust. Lauren Winner’s “Mudhouse Sabbath” got me about 3/4 of the way through my trek, and then Jim Kitchens’ “The Postmodern Parish” brought me right into Hagerman. Add to that getting 3 of my talks figured out for camp…and I’d say it was a pretty productive/safe day.

How exactly do you read and drive??

I can’t even read while sitting in my living room or laying in bed…
You’re too good, bro. If I were driving past you, I would give you a thumbs up.

There’s an interview with Lauren Winner in the next issue of The Door. I read Girl Meets God (not while driving) and it really made me appreciate how little we modern Christians understand our Jewish heritage.
Peace,
Karen

You think people give you disgusted looks when you read and drive, you should see the looks I get when I cruising down the road and I put the fifth of Jack up to my lips. Sheesh you would think I am waving a gun around or something.

Girl Meets God was a fun book, too. I’m looking forward to reading the interview in The Door.
