A Tribute

Date April 29, 2004

I have a friend. Tony. And it is his birthday today! HAPPY BIRTHDAY Tony! And after talking with him on the phone today, I realized I owe him a tribute.

We met our freshman year at Whitworth College and immediately became good friends. Then we went on a roadtrip together. And I was a complete asshole to him. And then we roomed together for one long, long, long year we now like to refer to as Hell. Somehow we got through that stage of our friendship, and came out better on the otherside (although it took a long time). We have shared many “firsts” together: first time for me to roadtrip with anyone, first time that we got kicked out of a casino in Reno, first time at a gay bar, first time getting hit on in a gay bar (he by a male, me by probably the only straight female at the bar)…

I owe much to Tony. He reminded me today (and I am aware of this) that I wouldn’t be in Idaho if it wasn’t for him (some would argue whether or not that would have been a bad thing) because he introduced me to Camp Sawtooth. He also reminded me that I wouldn’t be blogging today without him. And this is true. He introduced me to Typepad and my life hasn’t been the same since. We were going to write a book together, about postmodernism [this was our idea, my very first post, which I stole from him]. We met together at a monastery in Idaho, typed out an extensive bibliography, created an outline, wrote a nice beginning to an introduction…

And then life and seminary and church work hit. Who knows if there ever will be a book - but I want to thank Tony for his dear friendship, his willingness to give our friendship a second try and for his patience with me. Tony and I don’t agree on everything (sometimes it feels like we don’t agree on much…) but somehow, through the power of something or someone (God) we have maintained a strong friendship. Happy Birthday Tony!

Well, though my blog is currently tarnished by blogs re: my recent depression–it is coming up–and so I thank you for the link to my blog and the tribute. You know that I love you, Adam–so I will not remind you.

That was a nice tribute Adam. It reminded me that some of my own friendships that are on the skids right now, might yet revive.
    Peace,
    Karen
