Iain Torrance: Princeton Seminary President

Date April 15, 2004

Princeton Theological Seminary announced the selection of their 6th President on April 13th: The Right Reverend Professor Iain R. Torrance TD (official PTS information here). So far, it looks like an interesting selection. Obviously, the biggest issue in the PC(USA) right now is homosexuality and Torrance has some interesting views on the issue. According to the West Highland Free Press, he is quoted saying, “The General Assembly accepted in 1994 that congregations should not discriminate against any person on grounds of marital status or sexual orientation, and it seems to me that is a very positive step. In other words the Church of Scotland is not going to discriminate against a person who is of homosexual orientation as a minister. We are utterly untroubled by a person of homosexual orientation who is a minister.”

Here are some other articles or information about Torrance: Presbyterian Outlook, The Layman, BBC News, Atheism.about.com, Sunday Herald Online and this is his address to the 2003 General Assembly of the Church of Scotland.

Not that your post implied otherwise, but Torrance’s reported view is consistent with the position of the PC(USA). By the way, I’m excited that you’re coming!

A loss for Aberdeen is a gain for Princeton. It must be great to have a member of the theological mafia (Torrance syndicate) teaching at Princeton.
