Beauty
December 16, 2003

I was browsing through some old college documents and ran across this graphic from my Design 1 class. Pretty basic stuff, but it was an awesome course - taught by Scott Kolbo - his personal site is Existential Ape.
This collage was part of my Beauty project. We were told to create something and explain the “beauty” in it - and we were not allowed to use any babies, or kittens or sunsets [even though some people still did...]. Mine was the beauty of the diversity of human emotions [yes, even the beauty of the human expression more commonly known as "the bird"]. For a more detailed view, click on the graphic on the right. Does that represent anything you’ve been feeling toward God recently? To me, there are a variety of emotions expressed in the collage. Anger, despair, frustration, surrender, worship. What do you think?

I see the beauty in the range of those emotions. There is beauty in being able to be honest with you emotions, even if that means giving the finger, which is something that we know good church people don’t do. I think that there is also beauty in not separating out our emotions. I know that I am a big jumbled mess of all those emotions, and somehow there is beauty in them.

I particularly like the bird. It is part of our language in Canada and language is a tool that should be used right? right.

Adam-buddy … that is AWESOME. I knew you were a man of many talents … but, wow, I had no idea. Good stuff, dude.

Of course, I think the image(s) is(are) erotic, as well. But you’re a Christian, and I am sure you would want to keep that undercover.

Very nice. I knew Scott Kolbo when he was in grad school and have some of his stuff on my walls. Shortly we’ll be using some of his prints to decorate issue 1.4 of The New Pantagruel. We are always looking for artists and writers who like what we’re doing and who want to contribute their work.
