I’ve been in Princeton, NJ for about 30 hours, and I’ve experienced a lot. For those of you who don’t know, I’ve flown over to NJ to check out Princeton Theological Seminary – as I’m seriously considering becoming a student here next fall. So far, I’ve had an excellent time. I have been documenting (photos) the trip, and will have a photo album online when I get home (Sunday evening). I’ve sat in on three classes and gone to three bars [which I’ve been told is a good ratio]. Last night I went to the D-Bar, which is in the basement of a building on the Princeton University Graduate School. For some reason, they’re able to offer Newcastle and Guiness for $2.75 – which I have no problem with. I went with a couple of current seminarians last night. Then we went to the Triumph in downtown Princeton (again, I’ll have pictures soon).
This evening, I went down to Charlie Brown’s with Tony Jones and sat around a few tables with 10-12 M.A./M.Div./Th.M./Ph.D. students. I just sat around, listened, talked to Glen from Ireland. On the way home, Tony and I talked about emergent stuff, emergentYS books and how to get the emergent voice heard at Princeton. That is one interesting thing, which I was probably prepared for. Talk to a Princeton seminarian, and mention the “emergent” or “emerging church” – and all you’ll get is blank stares. So, if I end up here next fall, I look forward to talking more with Tony on how to get more emergent discussions going on within students.
Tomorrow I have some meetings, an Admissions interview and then a few of us prospective students are off to the D-Bar in the evening, and hopefully off to see RENT on Broadway on Saturday. I am really enjoying my time here in Princeton, and I’m definitely thinking it would be a great place to spend 3-4 years (if I get into the M.Div./M.A. dual degree program, 4 years — otherwise, just 3 years for an M.Div.). More later.
